Aerts verleidt de toeschouwer met een scenografie van aanzwellend licht en rook, en schept op die manier een theatrale omgeving voor zijn scupturen. Hij pakt je helemaal in.

De Belgische beeldend kunstenaar Michaël Aerts geeft met theatrale sculpturen, fijnzinnige tekeningen en een compleet opgetuigde SM-darkroom een overzicht van zijn vaak monumentale werk. Please Please Me zindert van betekenissen, maar wil de toeschouwer ook uit de sleur van zijn bestaan halen.

Aerts’ kolossale sculpturen tonen zijn interesse voor veranderende sociaal-culturele symbolen. Neem de ‘levensgrote’ obelisk, opgetrokken uit flightcases (normaal gebruikt om muziekapparatuur in te vervoeren) of de klassieke tempelfaçades die in de lucht zweven. Muziek, rook en een uitgekiende belichting zetten de sculpturen in een partysfeer.

Ook in de tekeningen en SM-darkroom zien we Aerts’ fascinatie met vervoering en verschuiving van realiteiten en symbolen. Bondage en andere vormen van ruige seks doen het beeld dat mensen van elkaar hebben kantelen, een effect dat ook vat krijgt op de bezoekers van de uitzonderlijke verzameling objecten in Aerts’ SM-darkroom.

Performance, Late Night Show & DJ Bart Skils 
Aerts kruist de floret met zijn Vlaamse collega-kunstenaar Vadim Vosters in de schermperformance Refence. In een Late Night Show gaat Aerts in gesprek met gasten van binnen én buiten de kunstwereld. Gespreksleider deze avond is Martin C. de Waal met muzikale begeleiding van Lucky Fonz III. DJ Bart Skils maakt het feestje compleet met een Silent Disco. Lees meer >

Michaël Aerts (Dendermonde, 1979) exposeerde afgelopen zomer in Milaan met A Night at the Playboy Mansion en debuteerde dit jaar in New York op de fameuze biënnale Performa. Michaël Aerts wordt vertegenwoordigd door DEWEER Gallery, Otegem (B) en werkt met Federico Luger Gallery, Milaan en Ron Mandos, Amsterdam.

With his theatrical sculptures, subtle drawings and a completely equipped SM-darkroom, the Belgian visual artist Michaël Aerts presents an overview of his largely monumental work. Please Please Me not only sizzles with inferred significance, but also attempts to draw the spectator out of the groove of his or her daily routine.

Aerts’s colossal sculptures are witness to his interest in changing socio-cultural symbols. Take for instance the ‘life-size’ obelisk, built up out of flight cases which are normally used for the transport of musical equipment, or the classical temple façades that float in the air. Music, smoke and sophisticated lighting surround the sculptures with a party atmosphere.

In the drawings and the SM-darkroom, too, we see how Aerts is fascinated by ecstasy and the shifting of reality and symbols. Bondage and other forms of rough sex cause the image people have of each other to tumble, and the same effect grips the visitors to the extraordinary collection of objects in Aerts’s SM-darkroom.

Performance, Late Night Show & DJ Bart Skils
Aerts crosses swords with his Flemish colleague artist Vadim Vosters in the fencing performance Refence. In a Late Night Show, Aerts enters into discussions with guests from within and outside the art world. Martin C. de Waal chairs this evening’s panel and will be musically accompanied by Lucky Fonz III. DJ Bart Skils perfects the party with a Silent Disco. Read more >
