‘Radical confluence’, ‘real virtuality’ en de ‘performativiteit’ van robotica? Victorian Circus V, de jaarlijkse vierdaagse rond nieuwe media in de Brakke Grond, is met het Belgische performancecollectief CREW onder leiding van kunstenaar Eric Joris nu al uniek te noemen.

Niet zozeer door bovenstaande begrippen, hoewel die afkomstig lijken van een andere planeet, maar door wat CREW ermee tot stand probeert te brengen: de versmelting van technologie, theater en wetenschap.

In CREW’s ogen is ieder mens in potentie een homo technologicus. Dat is iemand die door toepassing van technologische middelen zowel als toeschouwer als hoofdrolspeler  op twee plaatsen tegelijk in een theater live een verhaal binnen een verhaal bínnen een voorstelling kan spelen. Nu jij weer.

CREW/Eric Joris is een Belgische performancegroep rond Eric Joris, een artistieke duizendpoot die ooit begon als striptekenaar en nu vooral actief is als multimediaal artiest. Geruggensteund door een netwerk van kunstenaars en wetenschappers heeft hij zich met CREW, sinds de oprichting in 1996, geprofileerd als een pionier in het opzetten van live-art-experimenten die de grens tussen theater en technologie doen vervagen. www.crewonline.org

‘Radical confluence’, ‘real virtuality’ and the ‘performativity’ of robotica? Victorian Circus V, the annual four-day event around the new media held in De Brakke Grond, deserves the predicate unique with the Belgian performance collective CREW under the leadership of its artist director Eric Joris.

Not so much because of the concepts mentioned above, although they seem to come from another planet, but because of what CREW sets out to achieve with them: the blending of technology, theatre and science.

In CREW’s eyes, every person is potentially a homo technologicus. That is a person who, by the application of technological means, can act out a story within a story, live, both as an actor and as a spectator, in two places at once, within a theatre performance. Over to you!

The central focus is the one-to-one performance EUX, which the audience can attend every day as an demonstrative lecture.  Always followed by a special theme evening around the work of CREW with lectures, debates, interviews and films that are not to be missed.

CREW/Eric Joris is a Belgian performance group around Eric Joris, an artistic jack-of-all-trades who originally set out as a cartoon artist and has now developed into a multi-media artist. Supported by a network of artists and scientists he has profiled himself with CREW, since the foundation in 1996, as a pioneer in the designing of live-art experiments that blur the boundaries between theatre and technology.
