Fotografie en performance omarmen elkaar tijdens The Second Act, een vierdaags festival geïnitieerd door het internationale kunstenaarsplatform Time to Meet en gecureerd door Chris Clarke. Het festival brengt het werk van meer dan veertig kunstenaars samen in een uitgebreide tentoonstelling en een levendig programma met performance, filmvertoningen en debat verspreid door het hele gebouw van de Brakke Grond.

De titel van het festival verwijst naar het tweede bedrijf in een theaterstuk, het deel waar de verwikkeling onafgerond blijft en het verhaal nog alle kanten uit kan. Zonder enige voorbode kan de plot een drastische wending nemen. Het is dit moment dat The Second Act tracht op te zoeken, vast te grijpen en te verkennen.

The Second Act onderzoekt de raakvlakken tussen fotografie en performance. Het festival bevraagt hoe performance vastgelegd kan worden door de camera, en hoe een actie iets fundamenteels kan zeggen over de mogelijkheden en valkuilen van fotografische documentatie. Het festival zet fotografie neer als een actieve praktijk en als een medium dat meer oplevert dan een statisch beeld.

Time to Meet is een platform van en voor internationale kunstenaars, die zich wijden aan de verkenning van het fotografische medium. Time to Meet richt zich via tentoonstellingen, publicaties, lezingen en andere evenementen op het samenbrengen van kunstenaars met verschillende achtergronden en wil zo een levendig debat aanmoedigen tussen kunstenaars en publiek over fotografie en daaraan verwante thema's. The Second Act is een vervolg op het festival Sugary Photographs with Tricks, Poses & Effects, dat in 2010 plaatsvond op acht locaties in Antwerpen. Kleinere projecten van Time to Meet vonden eerder plaats in Nederland, Duitsland en België.

Chris Clarke is curator van educatie en collecties van de Lewis Glucksman Gallery in het Ierse Cork. Hij cureerde daar onder andere de tentoonstellingen Then & Now: Evolving Art Practices en Mixtapes: Popular Music in Contemporary Art. Ook draagt hij regelmatig bij aan kunsttijdschriften zoals Art Monthly, Circa en Photography and Culture. Lees het inteview door Raymond Frenken.

Photography and performance embrace during The Second Act, a four day festival initiated by Time to Meet, an international platform for contemporary artists, and curated by Chris Clarke. The festival brings together over forty artists in a lively program of performance, screenings and discussions alongside an extensive exhibition throughout the entirety of de Brakke Grond.

The title of the festival refers to the theatrical concept of the three-act play. The middle section stays unresolved, allowing the narrative to go in any direction. Things can take a drastic turn, without warning or notice, and it is this moment that The Second Act seeks to capture, to extend and to explore.

The Second Act investigates the intersections between photography and performance. It questions how performance can be captured through the intervention of the camera, and how the live action can say something fundamental about the potentials and pitfalls of photographic documentation. The Second Act treats photography as a live practice and as a medium that is never permanently captured in a still image.

Time to Meet is an ever-changing nomadic platform by and for international artists, dedicated to the exploration of the photographic medium. Time to Meet aims at bringing together artists from various backgrounds, through exhibitions, publications, lectures and other events and thereby wishes to stimulate a lively debate between artists and audiences on photography and its related themes. The Second Act follows on from Sugary Photographs with Tricks, Poses & Effects, a festival that took place at eight locations in Antwerp in 2010. Time to Meet has organized a range of small-scale projects in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany since 2006.

Chris Clarke is the curator of Education and Collections at Lewis Glucksman Gallery, Cork, Ireland, where he curated the exhibitions Then & Now: Evolving Art Practices and Mixtapes: Popular Music in Contemporary Art. He is also a frequent contributor to art journals and magazines including Art Monthly, Circa and Photography and Culture.
