De Brakke Grond presenteert nieuw werk van de Antwerpse beeldend kunstenaar en (mode)fotograaf Frederik Heyman (1984). Heyman bouwt detailrijke tableaus en gebruikt ze eenmalig voor een fotografische illustratie. Daarnaast toont hij met videobeelden en tekeningen de andere kant, hoe de opbouw tot het eindresultaat evolueert. Abstractie, humor en gedetailleerde beeldtaal zijn steeds aanwezig en ook de buitenwereld piept vaak om het hoekje.

Vrijdag 8 oktober om 19u00 is de opening van de expositie. Onder het befaamde 'dakje' van Frederik Heyman zorgt het Vlaamse Otark voor een eetperformance installatie. Ook wordt de Nederlandse première vertoond van de roadmovie door het collectief Bissy Bunder en om 20u30 kan je naar de performance Zanahoria van Bryssinck en Peeters.  Klik hier voor de fotoreportage.

Twee series van dergelijke ‘fotografische illustraties’ vormen de basis van de expositie. The Weather Project toont hoe de omgeving eruit ziet tijdens een aanval van wind, bliksem of water. Heyman werkt lange tijd – soms weken - aan zijn theatrale decors; het eindresultaat is de foto, en op video’s zien we hetzelfde beeld nogmaals, verstild, maar in een mysterieus bewegende omgeving. Tijdens het proces maakt de kunstenaar bovendien tekeningen die associatief voortvloeien uit het werk.

In The Roof Top Project zien we een eenvoudig dak dat overal, altijd, iets anders kan beschermen of verbergen. Eronder ontstaan steeds andere situaties: pijnlijk herkenbaar of aangrijpend lief.

Biografie
Frederik Heyman (Antwerpen, 1984) studeerde grafische en illustratieve vormgeving aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen, en haalde een tweede master als fotograaf aan diezelfde opleiding. Hij is naast vrij kunstenaar ook modefotograaf, waarbij hij op eenzelfde gestileerde manier te werk gaat. In al zijn werk besteedt hij minutieuze zorg aan de aankleding van mensen en decors. Heyman zelf: ‘Mijn beelden zijn evengoed illustraties als foto's. Ze beginnen steeds bij hetzelfde punt, maar de vertaling naar een medium kan variëren.’  www.frederikheyman.com

ma 7 & 8 okt, 20u30: Performance Zanahoria door Bryssinck en Peeters
Na de opening van de expositie kan je naar de absurdistische performance Zanahoria van Hans Bryssinck en Diederik Peeters. Zij openden in 2008 het dans en performance festival Something Raw met hun culthit Chuck Norris doesn’t sleep, he waits... In Zanahoria gaan ze op zoek naar hun ultieme evenbeeld en hun wildste fantasieën. De videoversie van Zanahoria was eerder te zien in de Appel arts centre. Lees meer >

De Brakke Grond presents new work by Antwerp visual artist and (fashion)photographer Frederik Heyman (1984). Heyman builds detailed tableaux and uses these once only for a photographic illustration. He also uses video images and drawings to show another side: how the building process evolves into the final result. Abstraction, humour and detailed visual language are always present, and the outside world also frequently comes peeking around the corner.

On Friday 8 October the exhibition opens at 19h00. Also the Dutch premiere will be shown of the Roadmovie by the collective Bissy Bunder and at 20h30 you can see the performance Zanahoria by Bryssinck en Peeters.

Two series of such ‘photographic illustrations’ form the basis for the exhibition. The Weather Project shows how the environment looks during attacks by wind, lightening or water. Heyman spends long periods – sometimes weeks at a time – on his theatrical decors; the end result is the photo. We also see the same image in his videos, but becalmed yet surrounded by a mysterious, moving environment. During the process, the artist also makes drawings that arise associatively from the work. In The Roof Top Project we see a simple roof that can protect or conceal something else: everywhere, any time. Beneath it, new situations constantly arise: painfully recognizable or poignantly tender.

Biography
Frederik Heyman (Antwerp, 1984) studied graphic and illustrative design at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten Antwerp, and obtained a second master’s degree in photography at the same institution. As well as an independent artist, he is also a fashion photographer, whereby he works in the same stylished way. In all of his work, he devotes painstaking care to the dressing of both people and decor. Heyman says: ‘My images can be seen as illustrations as well as photos. They always take the same starting point, although the translations for particular media can vary.’  www.frederikheyman.com
