ONTMASKERING VAN VALSE SCHIJN

De Brakke Grond presenteert Brightside en Shot in Flanders, twee fotoseries van Jimmy Kets (1979). Deze jonge Antwerpse fotograaf richt zijn lens op de kunstmatige omgevingen waarmee wij ons omringen. De decors van erotiekbeurzen, pretparken en dierentuinen fotografeert Kets met scherp flitslicht; zo ontmaskert hij hun vaalheid en valse glans. Mensen zijn slechts figuranten, verwikkeld in een zoektocht naar geluk en vermaak. Toch wordt het nergens schrijnend en bieden zijn foto’s de toeschouwer voldoende ruimte voor een bevrijdende lach.

Bewust laat Kets het psychologiseren achterwege: “Voor mij hoeft het niet tot op het bot. Ik ben gefascineerd door de eerste indruk, de manier waarop mensen hun buitenkant aan de wereld tonen.”

Shot in Flanders laat zien hoe de symboliek van het mythische Amerika vaste voet aan de grond heeft gekregen in Vlaanderen. Voor deze nieuwe reeks fotografeerde Kets autowassalons, Cadillacs met blinkend chroom en aftandse kopieën van het Vrijheidsbeeld die hij langs de steenwegen aantrof. Ze wijzen de weg naar een Amerikaanse droom die allang vervlogen is. De strakke compositie waarbinnen Kets deze overbekende symbolen weet te vangen, plaatst ze in een nieuw daglicht.

Brightside is een onderzoek naar de internationale vermaaksindustrie. Kets opereert meedogenloos: gladgetrokken vrouwen lijken even kunstmatig als de plastic planten in een beurshal. Bij deze reeks, die eerder geëxposeerd werd in het Fotomuseum Antwerpen, verscheen een gelijknamige publicatie.

Jimmy Kets (Lier, 1979) is fotograaf voor De Standaard en verschillende andere kranten en tijdschriften. Hij studeerde Illustratieve Vormgeving aan de Hogeschool Sint Lucas in Antwerpen. Kets won tal van prijzen, waaronder de Nikon Promising Young Photographer Award 2006 en 2008. Hij wordt vertegenwoordigd door de Antwerpse galerie Stieglitz19.

Brightside/Shot in Flanders maakt deel uit van het festival Belgie!? van 17 t/m 19 maart in de Brakke Grond. Met theater, fotografie, muziek en speeches over het moeilijkste land ter wereld.

UNMASKING OF THE FALSE SHINE

De Brakke Grond presents two photo series by Jimmy Kets (1979): Brightside and Shot in Flanders. This young photographer from Antwerp directs his lens towards the artificial environments that cluster around us. Kets photographs the backdrops of erotic fairs, theme parks and zoos using a bright flash, revealing their shallowness and the falsity of their sheen. The people in these pictures are just extras, caught up in the search for happiness and pleasure. The situation is never inhuman, however; Kets’ photos always give the viewer the scope for a relieved smile.

Kets deliberately avoids a psychological approach: “I don’t feel the need to draw blood. What fascinates me is that first impression, the way people present their exterior to the world.”

Shot in Flanders shows how the symbolism of mythical America has taken root in Flanders. For this new series, Kets photographed car washes, Cadillacs with gleaming chrome, and battered replicas of the Statue of Liberty found along the roadsides. Images that point the way to an American dream that has long evaporated. The tightly ordered compositions in which Kets arranges these over-familiar symbols reveals them in a new light.

Brightside is an investigation into the international amusement industry. Kets operates ruthlessly: women with their skin pulled taut look as artificial as the plastic plants in the hall of a trade fair. This series, previously exhibited at Antwerp’s FotoMuseum, is accompanied by a book of the same title.

Jimmy Kets (Lier, 1979) is a photographer for De Standaard, as well as several other newspapers and magazines. He studied Illustration Design at the Sint Lucas Antwerp. Kets has won many awards, including the Nikon Promising Young Photographer Award 2006 and 2008. He is represented by the Antwerp gallery Stieglitz19.
