Vlaams Cultuurhuis de Brakke Grond presenteert van 17 t/m 27 november 2011 samen met IDFA DocLab en IDFA Paradocs EXPANDING DOCUMENTARY II een expositie met grensverleggende, interactieve en digitale documentaire-installaties en een virtual reality performance van CREW. Want waarom alleen maar naar een documentaire kijken als je het ook kan beleven, betasten en manipuleren?

Opening op donderdag 17 november v.a. 19u00. Om 20u00 is er, als onderdeel van IDFA DocLab, een presentatie van het boek De Zachte Atlas van Nederland van documentairetekenaar Jan Rothuizen. (Reserveer hier alvast je ticket.) Met optredens van schrijvers Hans Aarsman en Dirk van Weelden. De Vlaamse broertjes Stijn en Raphaël staan achter de draaitafel.

C.A.P.E. – Een virtual reality performance van CREW
Maak een virtuele wandeling en test hoe de documentaire van de toekomst je zintuigen verwart. Uitgerust met een videobril, headset en draagbare computer word je in no time naar het centrum van Brussel geteleporteerd. Je belandt in een virtuele werkelijkheid, een 360° gefilmde omgeving waarin je kunt rondkijken, rondlopen en verdwalen.

Zoot Derks
Videokunstenaar Zoot Derks gebruikt de Brakke Grond als werkplek waar hij live een installatie creëert. Hij heeft een montagekamer ingericht waar hij de problematiek van het editen van videobeelden onderzoekt. Bezoekers worden uitgenodigd om actief deel te nemen aan deze constructie van technologische tijdslijnen.

What is it like to be a Bird?
Thijs van Vuure
Geloof het of niet, maar mediakunstenaar Thijs van Vuure heeft een manier gevonden om je te veranderen in een vogel. Probeer het zelf en laat je in enkele minuten vervogelen - vogels horen geen verschil!

Bogomir Doringer
De installatie Hospitality van Bogomir Doringer draait om de fysieke en psychologische transformatie die militairen doormaken nadat ze terugkomen van een oorlogsmissie als gevolg van onzichtbare nanodeeltjes in de lucht. De symptomen hiervan doen denken aan kanker, maar de ziekte gedraagt zich onvoorspelbaar. Slachtoffers zakken hierdoor weg in een tussenstaat van onzekerheid en wantrouwen die vergelijkbaar is met wat ze in de oorlogssituatie hebben ervaren. Hospitality onderzoekt de relatie tussen fictie en werkelijkheid. Doringer vraagt naar wat het betekent om ‘drager’ van deze ziekte te zijn en wat dat impliceert.

Doclab Live: Reality vs Technology
Op dinsdag 22 november is er een speciaal live event rondom drie van de meest innovatieve projecten op IDFA 2011. What Is It Like To Be A Bird, Barcode.tv en Condition One. Live gepresenteerd tijdens een eenmalige interactieve voorstelling met aansluitend een rondleiding door de Expanding Documentary expositie.

Eetcafé de Brakke Grond: Voor ieders goesting
Tussen de films, performances en installaties door kun je steeds terecht in Eetcafé de Brakke Grond. Tijdens IDFA zijn we dagelijks vanaf 9 uur geopend voor een heerlijk vers ontbijt of een straffe koffie. Maar ook op andere momenten van de dag krijg je hier goesting. ’s Middags neem je een croque bruxellois of een bruisende half en half als aperitief. En ’s avonds wordt er een speciaal IDFA-menu geserveerd. De menu’s worden snel bereid, zodat je op tijd weer klaar bent voor de volgende film.

C.A.P.E. – A virtual reality performance by CREW
Go on a virtual walk and experience how the documentary of the future will bamboozle your senses. Equipped with video goggles, a headset and portable computer, you are teleported in a trice to the centre of Brussels, landing in a virtual reality: a 360° filmed environment in which you can look around, walk around and even get lost.

Mont Age
Zoot Derks
Video artist Zoot Derks will be using the Brakke Grond as a workplace where he will create an installation live. He has set up an editing room in which he will be examining the issues surrounding the editing of video images. Visitors are invited to actively take part in this study of technological time lines.

Believe it or not, media artist Thijs van Vuure has found a way to transform you into a bird. Try it out for yourself: have your voice birdified in just a few minutes – birds can’t tell the difference!

Bogomir Doringer
Bogomir Doringer’s installation Hospitality deals with the psychological and physical transformation that soldiers go through after returning from overseas missions. Their health-related problems are linked the presence of invisible nanoparticles in the atmosphere, which penetrate the victim’s body. The symptoms they ‘host’ resemble forms of cancer, but the illness behaves unpredictably. Victims sink into a state of limbo similar to that experienced by those living in the war zones the soldiers just left. Hospitality examines the relation between fiction and reality, questioning ‘hospitality’ and all that it implies. In the space interviews and biopsy samples are gathered around a ferrofluid sculpture.

On Tuesday 22 November there is a special live event centering around three of the most innovative projects at IDFA 2011: What Is It Like To Be A Bird, Barcode.tv and Condition One will be presented live during a one-time interactive performance. With afterwards a guided tour through the Expanding Documentary exhibition.

During IDFA, we will be open from 9 a.m. for a great breakfast or strong coffee to set you up for the day, but you will also find something to tickle your fancy in our café all day long and well into the evening. Try a croque bruxellois or a sparkling half en half as an aperitif, and for dinner why not try the special IDFA menu. These daily specials are prepared quickly, so you will be in time for your next film.
