Recente ontwikkelingen in het Midden-Oosten zorgen voor een enorme opleving van regionaal talent in hedendaagse dans. Tijdens deze avond zullen drie van deze talenten korte stukken opvoeren die de frisheid, vitaliteit en de noodzaak van deze kunstdiscipline in deze regio onderstrepen. Enkelen van hen deden mee aan begeleidingstrajecten of residenties georganiseerd door Dancing on the Edge en partners uit de regio.

Shaymaa Shoukry (Egypte) – Exit/No Exit
De stad, de grenzen, de deuren en de bruggen… Dit stuk plaatst vraagtekens bij de mate waarin men zelf echt bepaalt in welke realiteit men leeft als ook de mate van verbondenheid met die structuren van de samenleving , die men in zich kan onderscheiden – sociaal geïntegreerd, politiek bewust en hierin hoe dan ook mee in aanraking gekomen, of toch in hun eigen, levendige dromen gebleven hangen? Tijdens de revolutie werden sommige vragen beantwoord, zoals naar voren komt in het stuk, maar het proces zal altijd gaande zijn.

Shaymaa Shoukry (Egypte) studeerde Visuele Kunst en Theater aan de American University van Caïro en dans aan de Cairo Opera House School. Ook volgde ze een aantal workshops hedendaagse dans bij Studio Emad Eddin. Haar focus ligt op choreografie, performing en videokunst, maar Shaymaa is een multi-gedisciplineerde artiest met een achtergrond in visuele vormgeving. Haar werk kenmerkt zich doordat zij deze disciplines met elkaar laat integreren, en is geïnspireerd op het door haar geliefde samenwerken. Shaymaa is resident geweest en heeft met veel plezier haar werk in binnen- en buitenland opgevoerd.

Ali Chahrour (Libanon) – On The Lips Snow
Door een fysiek zware en effectief maar ogenschijnlijk eenvoudig decor behandelt Chahrour de impact van herinneringen op ons leven. Ondanks pogingen deze te onderdrukken, hebben herinneringen een belangrijke invloed, zowel mentaal als fysiek. On The Lips Snow illustreert, soms onvoorspelbaar, dan weer gedramatiseerd, de strijd met het verleden en hoe dit zich uit in het hier en nu. Het stuk is geproduceerd door Maqamat Dance House uit Beiroet.

Ali Chahrour is in 1989 in Beiroet geboren en ontving in 2010 zijn theaterdiploma van de Universiteit van Libanon. In 2010 is hij ook afgestudeerd aan de Takween-Beirut Contemporary Dance School en is hij lid van het Takween Collective. Chahrour werkt sinds 2008 bij Maqamat Dance Theatre Company, dat geleid wordt door Omar Rajeh. Tot slot was hij resident bij Sasha Walt and Guests in Berlijn in maart 2011.

Mounir Saeed (Egypte) – The Other And Me
Saeeds stuk is zeer persoonlijk en gaat over onze waarnemingen, niet alleen van anderen, maar ook van onszelf. The Other And Me is een ontdekkingsreis die begint met illusie, om uiteindelijk uit te komen bij waarheid en oprechtheid. Deze innerlijke strijd wordt getoond door een eerlijke, coming-of-age choreografie.

Mounir Saeed deed mee met het Cairo Contemporary Dance Workshop Program, opgezet en geproduceerd door Studio Emad Eddin en geprogrammeerd door Laurance Rondoni. Ook trainde hij met danser, docent, choreograaf Karima Mansour.

Young Choreographers Evening

Recent developments in the world of contemporary dance in the Middle Eastern region have led to the emergence of a number of talented young choreographers. In this program, three of them will present short pieces that reflect the freshness, vitality and urgency of the art form in the region. All have participated in mentoring programs or residencies organized by Dancing on the Edge and partners within the framework of the Euro-Arab Multidisciplinary Cultural Exchange Project, 'The J.M Liverato Project', supported by the EU Commission.

On the Lips Snow
Choreographer: Ali Chahrour (Lebanon)
European Premiere
In this piece, using an intense physicality and a simple yet effective stage design, Ali Chahrour deals with the persistence of memory in people’s lives. Despite efforts to suppress memories, they impose themselves on both the mind and the body. Through On the Lips Snow, Ali Chahrour illustrates – sometimes whimsically and sometimes dramatically – people’s battle with the past and how it results in a new reality. The piece was produced by BIPOD/Maqamat Dance House in Beirut.

Ali Chahrour was born in Beirut in 1989. He received a Theater Diploma from The Lebanese University in 2010. He graduated from Takween-Beirut Contemporary Dance School in 2010 and is a member of the Takween Collective. Chahrour has worked with Maqamat Dance Theatre, led by Omar Rajeh, since 2008. In 2011 he participated in an artistic residence with Sasha Waltz and Guests in Berlin. His piece, On the Lips Snow, will be performed in the 2011 Dancing on the Edge Festival.
Ali Chahrour is also participating in a month-long residency as of the 20th of November 2011 at Dancing on The Edge. This residency is within the framework of the Euro-Arab Multidisciplinary Cultural Exchange Project, 'The J.M Liverato Project', supported by the EU Commission.

The Other and Me
Choreographer: Mounir Saeed (Egypt)
World Premiere

Saeed presents an intensely personal piece about perceptions and how we see not only others, but ourselves as well. The Other and Me is a journey of discovery, which starts with illusions, but eventually reaches a point of truth and sincerity. The internal battles along the way are shown in this honest, coming-of-age choreography.

Mounir Saeed studied at the ‘Cairo Contemporary Dance Workshop Program’, initiated and produced by Studio Emad Eddin Foundation and curated by Laurence Rondoni & Nevine EI Ibiary. He also trained with the dancer, teacher and choreographer Karima Mansour. Saeed has choreographed several works, including solos and group pieces. The Other and Me was created during a choreographic residency at Korzo Theater, supported by Dancing on the Edge within the framework of the Euro-Arab Multidisciplinary Cultural Exchange Project, 'The J.M Liverato Project', supported by the EU Commission.

The above mentioned residency is the result of a partnership between Dancing on the Edge (The Netherlands), Studio Emad Eddin Foundation (Sweden) and Orient Productions (Egypt).

Exit does Not Exit

The city, the borders, the doors and the bridges… This piece questions the level of control individuals have in choosing which reality they live in and the degree of detachment from society’s structures that they can determine in their own lives - socially integrated, politically aware, caught up with or in political events, or remaining in their own vivid dreams. Some answers were provided during the revolution, but the process – as expressed in the piece – is an ongoing quest.

Shaymaa Shoukry, who studied Visual Arts and Theatre in the American University in Cairo, and Dance at Cairo Opera House School, also followed a series of contemporary dance workshops at Studio Emad Eddin. With a focus on choreographing, performing, and creating video art, Shaymaa is a multidisciplinary artist. She comes from a visual arts background and is interested in integrating different disciplines in her creations. Shoukry participated in a choreographic residency at Dansmakers Amsterdam organized by Dancing on the Edge in 2009, and has made a number of pieces since then.

‘Exit does not Exit’ is the result of a co-production between Studio Emad Eddin Foundation (Sweden), Dancing on the Edge (The Netherlands) and Orient Productions (Egypt), within the framework of the Euro-Arab Multidisciplinary Cultural Exchange Project, 'The J.M Liverato Project'.
