De beeldend kunstenaars en filmmakers in de expositie Expanding Documentary fileren de documentaire: ze becommentariëren, hertalen en vervormen. Enkelen zetten daarvoor niet-filmisch werk in – een installatie, een audiowerk – anderen tornen vanuit het medium film zelf aan de eigenaardigheden van de documentaire. Alle werken reflecteren op de manier waarop de klassieke documentaire de werkelijkheid in beeld wil brengen.

Een selectie uit de expositie:

Wereldprimeur HIGHRISE/Out My Window StorySpace Installation
Dit project onderzoekt onze stedelijke planeet, gezien door de ogen van mensen die de wereld bekijken vanuit torenhoge flatgebouwen. De 360° web-documentaire Out My Window wordt hier uitgebreid tot een meer dan levensgrote, tastbare omgevingservaring. Katerina Cizek en het NFB HIGHRISE team hebben samengewerkt met de interactieve kunstenaar Priam Givord en het CFC Media Lab, en nemen ons mee op een reis naar het hart van een ‘ruimtelijke cinematografische belevenis’ waar geprojecteerde foto’s, cuts en close-ups meer dan levensgrote afmetingen aannemen, en fysiek voelbaar zijn.

Vita Nova
Vincent Meessen herwerkt zijn documentaire Vita Nova (getoond op IDFA 2009) tot een installatie. Het tijdschrift Paris-Match uit 1955, met op de cover de afbeelding van een kindsoldaat, ook het vertrekpunt van deze zoekende film, wordt hierbij opnieuw in circulatie gebracht. Het is een herlezing en herschikking van vergane informatie waardoor het een persoonlijke mythe in het leven roept.

The Corridor
Voor de video-installatie The Corridor volgde Sarah Vanagt een ezel die in Zuid-Engeland op bezoek gaat bij bejaarden in rusthuizen. Er vindt een ontmoeting plaats - tussen mens en dier, tussen heden en verleden, tussen huid en haar.

Expanding Documentary
exhibition in cooperation with IDFA and the Faculty of Fine Art, University College Ghent

The visual artists and filmmakers taking part in the exhibition Expanding Documentary open up the documentary form: commenting, repeating and transforming. Some will use media other than film to do so – including sculpture, performance – while others will unravel the peculiarities of the documentary using the medium of film itself. All of the resulting works will reflect on the way in which in the classic documentary strives to give the ‘effect of reality’.

A selection from the exhibition:

World Scoop HIGHRISE/Out My Window StorySpace Installation
This project explores our urban planet, through eyes of people who look out onto the world through highrise windows. It extends the 360° Web documentary Out My Window into a larger-than-life-size physical environment. Katerina Cizek and the NFB HIGHRISE team worked with interactive artist Priam Givord and the CFC Media Lab to take us on a journey into the centre of a “spatialized cinematic experience” where projected photographs, transitions, dissolves, cuts, and close-ups take on more than life-size proportions and are felt viscerally.

Vita Nova
Vincent Meessen has reworked his documentary Vita Nova (shown at IDFA 2009) into an installation that re-issues an edition of the magazine Paris-Match from 1955, with a picture of a child soldier on the cover – an image that was also the starting point for his searching film. A re-reading and re-organisation of forgotten information, which creates a personal myth.

The Corridor
For the video installation The Corridor, Sarah Vanagt follows a donkey that visits old people’s homes in the South of England. There is an encounter, between man and beast, past and present, skin and fur.
