DE BRAKKE GROND / C-TAKT / SOAP MAASTRICHT
Beyond the Black Box
Following up on its successful first edition, Beyond the Black Box is set to return in 2020. From 31 January to 8 February, de Brakke Grond presents transdisciplinary work from the Netherlands and Flanders in familiar and unexpected spaces.
Art in times of a shifting worldview
At a time when our anthropocentric worldview is starting to shift, Beyond the Black Box will showcase makers who examine their own position and that of their audience in relation to their environment.
Exploring hybrid art practices
Explore new artists who break with convention and experiment with hybrid forms through a programme including installations, performances, interventions, talks and immersive rituals. From a spectacular dance-performance-concert to an intimate 1-on-1 story experienced from a hammock.
On 31 January and 1 February, Beyond the Black Box kicks off with a Prologue. Transdisciplinary artist extraordinaire Miet Warlop is on the programme with her festival hit Ghost Writer and the Broken Hand Break.
On 31 January, Collectief Walden will open with their performance ENERGY no. 1 OIL, and for the next 9 days will build up their own ecosystem of installations and performances concerning climate chaos and the position of the human race.
From 5 thru 8 February, you can experience the festival with works by Sarah & Charles, Collectief Walden, Karel Burssens, Nazanin Fakoor, Emi Kodama, Stav Yeini, Nick Steur & Matea Bakula, Rita Hoofwijk, Salomé Mooij and others.
A day ticket gives you admission to the production(s) in the Grote Zaal and the ongoing installations. Day tickets cost € 15 for one evening. In addition, a series of productions and installations for small groups is on the programme under the name Up Close. Tickets for Up Close cost € 5 per production and can be purchased from the box office on the evening itself (in combination with a day ticket only).
Beyond the Black Box is organised in cooperation with C-TAKT, platform for transdisciplinary talent in Belgian Limburg, and production platform SoAP Maastricht.
is a platform for young, transdisciplinary talent. More and more artists are seeking out the boundaries of the arts disciplines and pushing at – or leaping over – these. This is leading to the creation of new means of expression that cannot easily be categorised within any one existing discipline. By supporting such artists, C-TAKT aims to provide opportunities for the development and realisation of these kinds of projects.
C-TAKT is the name of the merger between the artists’ workspaces at C-mine cultural centre (Genk) and TAKT Dommelhof (Neerpelt), along with regular partners: Musica, Platform 0090, wpZimmer, SoAP and In Situ (European platform for artistic creation in public space).
is the makers’ platform for projects by artists Johannes Bellinkx, Rita Hoofwijk, Nick Steur, TAAT, Benjamin Vandewalle and Salomé Mooij. Taking as its starting point the content of the projects and always in relation to the maker’s artistic practice, SoAP sets out together with the maker to plot a course around a project. This flexible approach gives SoAP its identity. As a platform always in motion, SoAP is constantly on the lookout for the right preconditions for the planning of a creative process.
Beyond the Black Box is supported by Fonds Podiumkunsten and the general delegation of the Flemish government in The Netherlands.
