DocLab: Uncharted Rituals

Robots and computers increasingly starting to resemble humans. But are we humans now starting to resemble robots? Addicted to our telephones, caught up in virtual filter bubbles and dependent on a handful of tech companies, our behaviour is becoming easier and easier for computers to predict. DocLab therefore explores new stories and forms of interaction between man and machine.

More than 25 installations search the boundaries between the physical and digital world. For example Trophy Camera v0.9, an experimental photo camera that can only make award-winning pictures. This AI-powered camera, developed by photographer Max Pinckers and media artist (and DocLab Academy alumnus) Dries Depoorter, is programmed to recognise, make and save only photos that have at least a 90% chance of winning. Another work from Flemish sound artists Duncan Speakman, It Must Have Been Dark By Then, exists of a beautifully designed book, a map on your phone and audio stories helping you to explore how your experiences color your environment. The retrospective and Top 10 projects chosen by media artist and IDFA main guest Jonathan Harris can also be seen at De Brakke Grond.
